Prenatal and Postnatal Care: How Mom and Baby Can Benefit from Chiropractic Care

 |

Enjoying Your Pregnancy?

Hormonal and structural changes during pregnancy can lead to spinal and pelvic misalignment, and the consequent lower back pain many women experience.  Chiropractic care for babies and mothers provides many benefits as you approach your pregnancy, and post pregnancy.

Sound Corrections Chiropractic is certified in The Webster Technique, which is specifically designed to correct sacral subluxations and facilitate the mother’s pelvic alignment and nerve system function, creating the most ideal environment for mother and baby.

Benefits of Prenatal Care

  • More comfortable pregnancy-Control symptoms like nausea
  • Reduce time of labor and delivery
  • Relieve back, neck, and joint pain
  • Properly positions the baby, preventing the possibility of a C-section

Postnatal Care: Why Infants Need Chiropractic Care

“Why does my baby need a chiropractor?”

A pediatric chiropractor may not be something you have considered. Most people try their best to ponder why it may be important for children to be assessed by a pediatric chiropractor, however, they struggle typically due to two different reasons. Either they think that somehow the chiropractor will turn the child into a pretzel and then crack the entire spine or that children don’t feel back pain and that’s what chiropractors are all about… right? Not so much.

Chiropractors are trained in the nervous system and know how biomechanics can alter nerve function. The general premise of chiropractic care is optimizing nerve function as the nervous system controls every function of the body. Trained pediatric chiropractors know how to gently adjust children without twisting or popping. Typically the child is lying on their back or on their mother’s stomach with no twisting involved. The amount of pressure used to adjust an infant is the amount of pressure you would use to tell if a tomato is ripe or not.

Birth Trauma

Being born is tough! There is a reason it’s called the “Miracle of life”. The birthing process is both beautiful and difficult. There are various ways that children can be born and each has their pros and cons; however, each version can be traumatic. With each birth, there is always a possibility that the baby suffers some sort of strain due to various reasons.

A recent study by Viola Frymann showed that 90% of newborns suffered the effects of birth trauma. This was associated with strain through the neck and cranial areas after birth. This makes sense as it’s the most vulnerable area of the body. After studying 1,500 babies, she noted three things:

  • Only 10% of the newborns had no signs of neck/cranial trauma.
  • 10% had severe trauma to the head, evident even to untrained observers.
  • The remaining 80% were in between showing signs of strain.

When these issues are left uncorrected, the child’s nervous system will have dysfunction which will impact the child’s spinal growth, and cognitive development and hinder the immune system. This can cause health issues down the road that can be unseen for years.

What can cause birth trauma?

  • Very short/long labor
  • Failure of the cervix to dilate
  • Usage of Pitocin
  • Use of forceps or vacuum extraction
  • Cord around baby’s neck
  • Cesarean delivery (due to lack of progress)
  • Pulling or twisting on the head

“Chiropractic care throughout pregnancy removes interference to the mother’s nervous system, enhancing baby development and uterine function. It balances her pelvis, eliminating undue tension to muscles and ligaments and enhancing optimal fetal positioning.”

How can we help?

Sound Corrections Chiropractic, PLLC is an upper cervical pediatric clinic. While we help out the whole family, we have a passion for helping children and pregnant mothers.  Our main focus is to ensure that the brainstem is functioning correctly. This is done through non-invasive neurological and biomechanical testing. Once we have assessed the child, we make a small gentle adjustment and prescribe home exercises for the brain if needed. Afterward, we follow up as needed to ensure that the child is developing correctly.
